一场大雨过后，平静的城市里，植物上的水滴中正萌发出奇怪的生物…… 供职于卫生署的伊丽莎白（Brooke Adams 饰）在郊外采集到一株小型植物，她向丈夫杰弗里解释这很可能是新发现的物种。与此同时，伊丽莎白的同事马修（唐纳德•萨瑟兰 Donald Sutherland 饰）正因为一丝不苟的执法而遭到报复。第二天，伊丽莎白惊奇的发现杰弗里行为反常，举止木讷，伊丽莎白请求马修的帮助，随后他们发现有更多人状态发生了变化，伊丽莎白更目击杰弗里与一群陌生人接头，不久，有多人死于身体变异，他们周身萌发出白色的须状物，形同植物。马修向政府反映当地的生物危机，然而只得到冷漠的回应，人群的异化正在扩散，伊丽莎白和马修处境孤立，但仍然试图拯救城市……The first remake of the paranoid infiltration classic moves the setting for the invasion from a small town to the city of San Fransisco and starts as Matthew Bennell notices that several of his friends are complaining that their close relatives are in some way different. When questioned later they themselves seem changed as they deny everything or make lame excuses. As the invaders increase in number they become more open and Bennell, who has by now witnessed an attempted "replacement" realises that he and his friends must escape or suffer the same fate. But who can he trust to help him and who has already been snatched?
