工人阶级出身的文学青年祖儿（伊万.麦克戈雷格 Ewan McGregor 饰）在驳船主里斯夫妇的船上打工并和夫妇二人一起生活在船上。一天，祖儿在岸边发现水里浮起了一具已经发白的女尸，惊慌的祖儿和里斯捞起了女尸。 当晚，祖儿在和里斯夫妇吃饭的时候讲了白天捞起女尸的事情，并对女主人艾娜（蒂尔达.斯温顿 Tilda Swinton 饰）百般勾引，在丈夫身上得不到满足、平日阴沉抑郁的艾娜晚饭后就和祖儿搭上了。祖儿再一次提起了女尸的事情。 原来，女尸生前曾是祖儿的情人。随着祖儿的回忆，事情一幕幕揭开……Joe, a rootless young drifter, finds work on a barge travelling between Glasgow and Edinburgh, owned by Les and his wife Ella. One afternoon they discover the corpse of a young woman floating in the water. Accident? Suicide? Murder? As the police investigate and suspect is arrested, we discover that Joe knows more than he is letting on. Gradually we learn of Joe's past relationship with the dead woman. Meanwhile an unspoken attraction develops between Joe and Ella, heightening the claustrophobic tensions in the confined space of the barge.
