剧情的背景其实就是在原著的基础上，做了些科幻式的改编。原著中的黑暗、混沌在这里成了太阳黑子爆发，而原本的一个石猴的问世变成了三颗陨石的陨落和神化。要打败天魔，惟一方法是要某年某月某日某时某刻某分某秒出世的人，由其中一颗陨石的化身护送他到西天取三藏真经。Adapted from the classic chinese novel "Journey to the West", The Monkey King (Dicky Cheung) got punished by the Buddha and imprisoned under the Palm Mountain, the only method to release himself is that he is willing to team up with The Mentor as well as the Sand Monk, The Dragon Horse and Chu Bak Gei, to get a bible from the West Sky, in order to save the entire world, which is going to be destroyed by the deadly evil. During the adventure and the tough journey to the west, The Monkey King and the team also encounter several evil villians and also has to face the crisis that may break the relationship between the team.
